How to sign your Illinois title when selling your vehicle

The registered owner of the vehicle should complete the following easy steps:
  1. Always sign the front of the title where indicated by “Signature(s) of Seller(s)”.
  2. Second, print (don’t sign) your name on the front of the title where it reads “Printed Name(s) of Seller(s)”.

How to get a duplicate title for my vehicle

If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Illinois, you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state in which the vehicle was last titled.
The registered owner of the vehicle should complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the Illinois Application for Vehicle Transactions (VSD190) online form. Check the box that says “Duplicate title”
  2. You can choose to do one of the following options: Bring your duplicate title application to your local Illinois DMV office, or, Mail your application to the Illinois division of motor vehicles at:

Vehicle Services Department
ERT Section, Rm. 424 (use Rm. 434 if expedited processing is needed)

Please note that there may be a one to two day waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $95.00. (Paid to the IL division of motor vehicles).
