How to sign you Maine title when selling your vehicle

Important: Maine titles may need to be notarized

The registered owner of the vehicle must complete the following easy steps:
  1. Always sign the back of the title where indicated by “Seller’s signature”.
  2. Second, print (don’t sign) your name on the back of the title where it reads “Hand printed”.

How to get a duplicate title for my vehicle

If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Maine, you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state in which the vehicle was last titled. Find your state at the bottom of our homepage for instructions.
The registered owner of the vehicle should complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the Maine certificate of title request form.
  2. You can choose to do one of the following options: Bring your duplicate title application to the local Maine BMV office, or, Mail your application to the Maine bureau of motor vehicles at:

Please note that there is a 6 to 8 week waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $33.00. You can have your request expedited for an additional $10.00.
