How to sign your Montana title when selling your vehicle

IMPORTANT: Montana titles may need to be notarized

The registered owner of the vehicle should complete the following easy steps:
  1. Always sign the front of the title where indicated by “Signature of owner or agent owner”. This may need to be done in front of a legal notary. Legal notary’s can be found at any bank, DMV, or legal offices.
  2. Second, print (don’t sign) your name on the back of the title where it reads “Printed name”.
  3.  Have the title notarized if required.

How to get a duplicate title for my vehicle

If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Montana, you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state in which the vehicle was last titled.
The registered owner of the vehicle should complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the Montana Application for Replacement Certificate of Title.
  2. You can choose to do one of the following options: Bring your duplicate title application to the local Montana MVD office, or, Mail your application to the MT division of motor vehicles at:

Motor Vehicle Division
Montana Department of Justice

Please note that there may be a waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $10.00. (Paid to the MT DOJ motor vehicle division).
