How to sign your New Jersey title when selling your vehicle

The registered owner of the vehicle must complete the following easy steps:
  1. Always, print (don’t sign) your name on the back of the title where it reads “Seller’s name (hand print)”.
  2. Second, sign the back of the title where indicated by “Seller’s signature”.

How to get a duplicate title for my vehicle

If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than New Jersey, you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state in which the vehicle was last titled. Find your state at the bottom of our homepage for instructions.
The registered owner of the vehicle must complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the New Jersey Application for Duplicate Certificate of Ownership.
  2. You can choose to do one of the following options: Bring your duplicate title application to the MVC office, or, Mail your application to the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission at:

Please note that there may be a one – two day waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $60.00. (Paid to the NJ MVC).
